on the market

You can find round and circular-form houses for sale right now in the US, UK, Australia and Canada for prices ranging from $87,500 to $10 million.  On the lavish — and arguably garish — end of the spectrum, there’s this 1980s luxury villa on Hamilton Island, in Australia, and the “Corbetta Estate” in Los Altos Hills, California (which was the cooler and much more fun Corbetta Party House in a former incarnation).

Bringing up the low end of the market, at a modest 696 square feet in size, is one of the many small post-war round houses in Des Moines, Iowa.

A few other houses stand out -

You can also find two round houses for sale in the UK, one in Portland, Dorset, selling for £925,000, and the other in Sidmouth, Devon, selling for £849,950.

The house in Arkansas is not a confirmed Gilbert Spindel.

I am trying to find out who designed this house. Any ideas anyone? These 2 were in southern Miami Dade county. Recently demolished by the county. I tried everything to buy them for preservation, but…. There are examples of the same house in myrtle beach, ft. Lauderdale and the Florida keys. They are blown concrete. Incredible. Anyone have any ideas?
I tried to upload a pic , but it won’t work. How can I get an image posted? Thanks.

Hi Skip – I think the Arkansas house was designed by Gilbert Spindel, an Atlanta-based designer active in the ’50s and ’60s, but as Sarah G notes, this hasn’t been confirmed. Sad to hear that about the houses that were demolished. I know of a couple of Spindels in Florida — one in Jacksonville and one in Pahokee.

If you have photos, please send them to roundhousesblog[at]gmail[dot]com. Thanks!

Sorry, I was misunderstood. I was trying to upload a pic of the houses I am talking about, not the spindle house. I can not get the pic to upload. Any ideas?

To have the real effect of round buildings, the interior spaces & furniture should be designed on the basis of round.
